LIVESTOCK PROGRAM
Support Livelihoods with the Gift of Livestock
We are actively engaged in livestock-based livelihood programs that have proven highly effective in supporting refugees and vulnerable host communities. Our initiative focuses on the rearing of goats, chickens, pigs, and sheep—selected for their adaptability, quick productivity, and strong market value.

When refugees are given livestock, they learn how to successfully raise and care for their animals from teams and a vet, and the animals receive free medication for the first year.
Benefits of Livestock
-
Food Security: Provides reliable access to milk, eggs, and meat, improving household nutrition. Many families consume goat milk, which is highly nutritious and easier to digest than cow’s milk.
-
Income Generating: Families can sell live animals and animal products, creating a sustainable stream of income.
-
Asset Building: Livestock serves as a form of savings and insurance, enabling households to cope with unexpected shocks.
-
Empowerment of Women and Youth: Small livestock, such as goats and chickens, are often managed by women and youth, strengthening their role in household livelihoods.
-
Social Cohesion: Shared markets and services around livestock foster stronger ties between refugees and host communities.

Current Livestock Program Locations

-

Partnerships
We are grateful to partner with Lifting Hands International, whose collaboration has been instrumental in reaching vulnerable families and expanding the impact of our livestock programs. Beyond livestock, we look forward to opportunities to partner in other projects together, such as education, health, agriculture, and community development, since we have strong, capable teams in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda.

Success Story – Nyarukundo’s Journey
Nyarukundo, a refugee participant in our livestock program, was able to sell one of her goats and use the income to start a small business. Today, she not only provides food for her family but also earns a steady income, proving how livestock can be a stepping stone to economic independence and dignity.
