GRHU's Training Centre is located within Kyaka II Refugee Camp, where over 130,000 refugees have fled the war from surrounding countries. Most of the refugees are women and children. The goal of this Training Centre is to build economic independence as a tool to enable refugees to work their way out of poverty and provide basic necessities for their families, strengthening their whole community.

We have found that women are in the most need within the refugee camp, as their husbands and men of the family were killed in the war. They are alone and lack the education and skills to secure a safe job that provides for their children. We believe that women are the mothers of nations, and GRHU reaches out to them with the intention of empowering them to face the challenges they encounter in the refugee camp, as well as preparing them for the future. Some of the specific women we aim to enroll in our training programs are teenage mothers, widows, and women/girls who have been infected with HIV.

Students who have graduated from the Training Centre as seamstresses and hairdressers have joined the workforce, and some have even established their own small businesses within the refugee camp and in the capital city of Uganda.

To start a small business of sewing or hairdressing is $500 CAD.  This will enable the mom to obtain a sewing machine, rent a small space, and acquire the necessary materials to start, along with the GRHU Staff at our Training Centre, to provide them with support and guidance. Our team will keep you updated on the progress of the business and the well-being of the mother whom you have supported.

To fund a woman on our waiting list, you can provide financial support on a monthly or quarterly basis for a period of six months.

The cost to run both programs is $2500. This covers the salaries of 4 teachers, a security guard, materials needed for 6 months for both programs, and an experienced, skilled businessperson who offers guidance and mentorship to the mothers while they are in the program on how to run their own businesses. This mentor supports them for an additional 6 months after their graduation to ensure they are making informed decisions in their business or new job. This program has transformed the lives of many widows and young girls, empowering them to become independent and provide for their children.

Give a gift that keeps on giving.
